Hop and BIG FISH

There once was a frog named Hop. He was a naughty little frog who always wanted to do the right thing, but always found himself in trouble. On this particular day, Hop was planning a cooling summer swim with his friends. His mother had warned him that on such hot days, the big fish in the water loved to feast on little frogs, but Hop didn't care. Nothing was going to stop him. All he could think about was the feeling of the cool water rushing over his little frog body, beginning with his toes all the way to his nose. He gathered his friends and they headed for the pond. The lilly pads were especially green and there was an area of the pond, shaded by the trees, that was much cooler than the rest of the pond. Who was going to go first was the only question Hop and his friends had in their minds. Each wanting to beat the others into the water, they all jumped in seemingly together, although Hop was certain that he had been first! The cool rush was just as he had hoped it would be.
As Hop and his friends were enjoying their swim, leaping from lilly pad to lilly pad, some big, some small, they didn't notice that the other animals standing on the bank of the water were watching them with a curious look. There were birds, and deer; skunks and squirrels. Each time Hop looked over at these onlookers, he noticed their glare became more and more intense, as if they were waiting to see what was going to happen. Thinking little of it, Hop continued to swim, remembering to be careful, but also feeling invincible.
Suddenly, Hop's frog friend Chino made a big splash as he leaped up onto the large lilly pad in the middle of the river. He waited there and called to his friends to join him quickly. Each frog hopped to safety. They watched intently as the BIG FISH circled their cluster of lilly pads. He circled and circled, bumping the lilly pads from underneath. Hops heart beat faster than it ever had. Oh, how he wished he had listened to his mom. If only he could reach the edge of the pond in one leap. BIG FISH came around for one last attempt to bump Hop off his lilly pad, almost with success until Mr. Beaver swam close by and scared the BIG FISH away. Mr. Beaver had promised Hop's mom and dad, secretly of course, that he would keep an eye out for Hop and his friends when they were swimming at the pond.
Not wanting to crush Hop's autonomy, Mr. Beaver pretended that he had not seen the BIG FISH threatening the young frogs and simply asked Hop how his day was going. Hop gave a shaking reply and returned the question. Mr. Beaver was an old, wise beaver. His family had occupied this pond for over 100 years. All he could say to Hop was "Nice to see you. Say hello to your parents."
Hop promised he would and quickly waved his friends to follow him to safety on the bank of the pond. As Hop returned home that night, he pondered the wisdom of his mom. He knew she had been right and realized how close he had come to being eaten up in one big gulf of the BIG FISH's mouth. Hop loved his mom and decided from that moment on, that he wanted to do a better job obeying her words. He hugged her tightly with his wet slimy arms. Hop's mom could feel his heart beat fast. At this point she knew Hop had seen BIG FISH. She hugged him back and in her quiet, humble way, without words, communicated her pleasure that Hop had learned his lesson.
The End!

Facebook Funnies

I have posted some of our funny stories on Facebook and thought it might be a good idea to put them on our blog... so here they are, most recent to oldest:

So as Eric was putting on his new strappy gun vest to hold his new air soft
pistol, Sammy, thinking it was a black bra, looked at him with a slight smile,
kind of feeling embarassed for him, and he said quietly as if to warn Eric:
"Eric, that is for mommies."

I don't know which is more upsetting... That my 21 month old spotted a McDonalds
a quarter mile away and said "mmmmm, yummy!" or that my 3 year old
asked me if I could make him a coffee with two splendas.

Me: "Sam, what flavor is your lollipop?" (it was purple)
Sam: "MOTRIN"

DearNaomi,
I know you are only 3, and I know you have no idea how
much of an affect you have had on my Sammy, but I must say, he is ready to
betroth you. Today he told me that YOU were HIS girl and he loves you and that
you belong to him... kind of like a pet belongs to its owner. It was funny, and
kind of scary at the same time. So please know, sweet little girl, whose
picture Sammy kissed all afternoon on the apple book he brought home from
preschool, I am praying for you, should you be the one for my boy.

When I told Sammy that our Bible study friends were coming today he was so happy. He
responded by asking "Do you mean Maggie (his little 4 yr. old friend)?"
Yes, Sammy... I mean Maggie. He went on... "Awwwww. I love my girlfriends.
I have lots of girlfriends." Yes Sammy, you do. Keep this up and you
always will.

{Setting: Aaron and I are driving Eric in the minivan}
Eric: "Mom, why does your stomach hurt?"
Me: (Totally honest) "I think I ovulated today... no big deal."
Eric: "Come Again?! What does that mean?"
Me: "Um..." ..(long silence).. "well, once a month an egg is
released..."
...

Love coming home at midnight from a date to find the evening
report taped to our door with a band-aid.

Sammy just asked, "Where's Andrew and Dude?" I asked, "Who is
Dude?", he answered: "Andrew's friend." (aka: Paul)

Eric was crying because we would not spontaneously take him to a Skins game today.
So I asked Sam to go cheer him up... the conversation went as follows:
Sam: Eric, why are you sad?
Eric: Because Daddy won't take me to a football game
and I might never have another chance to go.
Sam: It's ok Eric. When I'm grown up and I'm a daddy,
I'll take you.

I asked Sam why he took the jacket off my book and ripped it into 10 pieces.
Apparently he was making a door. I choose to consider that resourceful instead
of destructive!!!!

Ok... a little scary... I was telling an improv story to my 3 year old and just had
to finish it, even though he fell asleep. I wanted to know how it ended, even
though I was making it up. Oh my.

In the car today, Elley, Aaron and I talked about past boyfriends and
girlfriends....
Me: Daddy and Mommy had girlfriends and boyfriends
before we met and got married.
Elley: Mommy probably had more than you did, Dad.

·
He fell asleep during dinner again!!!

{Scene:
upstairs in our bedroom, three older kids on the floor playing/roughhousing,
Sam (our 3 year old) and Aaron are on the bed relaxing...}
[Aaron] "Sierra [our 18 month old] is
sleepig...kids, be quieter or I'll have to kick you out."
[Sam] "Dad, don't kick them..they are
family."
Andrew (age 9): Mom, eating a hotdog in Camden Yards is
something you experience at some point in your lifetime."
...thanks for the tip, babe.

My Aunt Connie: "It is so fun coming to your house. It's even more fun
leaving!" (speaking of leaving the chaos of a large family)

on the way to see "Monte Carlo" with Elley and Emma:
Me: "so girls, what do you want from the
concessions?"
Elley:"popcorn"
Me: "I want a coke"
Emma: "I want Sour Patch Kids. Just thinking of
them puts a little sizzle in my mouth!"
Me: intensely dangerous laughter while driving.

Me: Sam, when someone gets you a gift, what do you say?
Sam: Give it to me.

Silence is golden unless it's coming from the pantry which contains your 1 and 3 year
olds!

Emma's prayer tonight (age 8) that God would
1. Help her learn to ride a bike and be brave.
2. help all the children, including her own in the
future, to be brave in the face of a shot or cavity.
3. help her not get a cavity
4. help her pick a good husband!

Emma is a lovely daughter to homeschool. I caught her for a few pictures before she noticed me. Then the poses didn't stop.

Never Too Young For A Krispe Kreme Face

Yes, this would be Sierra (age 14 months) after her first Krispe Kreme.

Life is full as a family of eight! People ask me how I do it, and my honest answer is "I don't really know except by the grace of God." Some days seem perfect, and others, well, let's just say, not so perfect! Here is a peek into my busy life as a mother of 6 wonderful kids (Elley, Eric, Andrew, Emma, Sam, and Sierra) and wife to the best husband in the world.
